An Interview with Chris Vogel by Still Mountain Chi Kung Institute
Still Mountain: Is this workshop only for "advanced" tai chi practitioners?
Chris Vogel: No, I wish that I had learned what I would be teaching at the very start when I was learning tai chi. My learning would have been faster and more efficient as I would have avoided developing many bad habits from not knowing the right feel and basic posture and movement qualities. Of course, beginners and advance would learn differently at their different levels. Essentially, every one would increase one's level of learning.
You mean, one can jump up from the proficiency level one is in through this workshop?
YES. BUT REMEMBER THAT YOU DID NOT LEARN A FORM IN ONE DAY. EVEN WHEN YOU KNOW THE OUTSIDE, OR MOVES OF A FORM, YOU STILL WORKED WITH IT EVERY DAY TO MAKE IT MORE AND MORE YOURS. THE SAME TYPE OF THINKING GOES FOR WHAT WILL BE PRESENTED IN THE WORKSHOP. YOU WILL GO AWAY WITH EVERYTHING, BUT LIKE YOUR OTHER TAI CHI LEARNINGS, IT WILL TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO DIGEST THE INFORMATION AND REALLY MAKE IT YOURS. Push hands is really the key to the real understanding of tai chi. Without it, we would be doing something that looks like tai chi, yes it can be very good looking, but it would MOST LIKELY be empty inside. It would be a beautiful dance that looks like tai chi. For many that would be enough, but to really gain the full health benefits and have an insight into tai chi's beautiful philosophy and martial arts application, the indispensable bridge is push hands.
I regularly do standing as part of my practice, what new thing will I learn in your workshop?
I've met many teachers of tai chi who also teach the qigong of Standing. But, when I push with them, I realize they can't use their root, their structure collapses, they are easily unbalanced and they cannot apply the energy they have.
In this workshop, we will not only learn the mechanics, imagery and sensations of standing, but, equally, we will also learn how they relate to push hands practice. Further, we will also learn how push hands relates not only to doing standing, but also to doing the form. It is the intention of this workshop to put direction to the way we practice either standing, form or push hands itself such that we are able to use our root, structure, and energy. This right direction of concept and intention is for us to jump levels in proficiency. This means, after this workshop, every time we apply this learning in our practice, we would be improving on our "internal power", thus will be breaking out to higher level from the rut that we ALL CAN FALL fAll into.
What else can I gain from this workshop?
You will also be given the way to gain the qualities of a good structure – the feeling of springYness and being connected and ROOTED. To gain the quality referred to as "iron wrapped in cotton". One will also learn the idea of having a center line and how to develop the ability to shrink and shift this line.
What other valuable qualities will I learn that I would not learn by myself practicing or reading in the Internet?
Tai chi is essentially a martial art requiring another person to learn with. That is the reason why the ancient masters developED push hands. Thru two persons learning and practicING one is able to put one's abilities "under a microscope". It is an important tool to observe the many subtle and profound aspects of this internal martial art. Push hands actually tests whether you can use the energies developed in our formS practice, standing and silkreeling.
In this workshop we will learn to practice the basic and the essentials in standing, silkreeling and push hands in an experiential level. In the process we will understand some important skills in:
  • Contact Intention – How to listen to one's and other's energy. To distinguish the quality of our own and the other's structure.
  • Covering Lanes of Attack on You – How to avoid being HIT and ensure exits so that we are not jammed into a "corner'.
  • Connection and Chi Ball – How to form a clear connection with your partner and how to send chi in them to listen to their structure and energy "holes".
These are a few of the understandINGS we pick up from pushing hands with a qualified teacher, that we can bring into all our practices – our standing, our form, our lives and our own push hands with others. This is the way to break-out of the plateau MANY OF US HAVE experienceD, and jump out from the level we are in from after many years of practice.
Very few teachers teach this art. I hope people will take this opportunity to learn. This is our "yuan feng" – our luck.

Last question- Is P1,500 not expensive for a 4 hour workshop?

Actually, the average fee for a class of 50 people is around P300/hour. This workshop is limited to only 14 participants to give everyone the chance to personally push hands with the teacher. Considering that and that there is also snacks and handout material. That is very reasonable. Finally, it's real value depends on how much real tai chi is worth to us. Some of us even go to China and spend real big for something one wants.

Real last one - I'm a teacher, wouldn't I lose my face learning?

Most definitely not! All really good teachers, continuously learn. That's what makes them really good. Everyone can learn from everyone, including myself, I learn from EVERYONE I PUSH WITH. IF THEY CAN PUSH ME AROUND, GREAT. I'VE GOT SOMETHING NEW TO WORK ON.

Hi Tai Chi Warriors:

The Introductory Workshop of Tai Chi Push Hands by Chris Vogel at Dasmarinas Village last Sept 23 & 29 was very positively received based on the post workshop survey and its full participation.

Now, the Workshop Series continues for November 11 and 19, both Sundays from 10AM-3PM. As usual, the participants shall be limited to 14 people for each of the workshop dates. First come, first served.

Also, take note of the new venue which is the Wushu Federation of the Philippines Gym at the Rizal Memorial Complex in Manila. Take note also that this is now being conducted in cooperation of both the Wushu Fed and the work-in-process Tai Chi Union Philippines.

Hope you can make time for this rare opportunity to learn some tai chi concepts that are difficult to obtain even in China, Europe or the USA. This is our luck to have it available for us - our "yuan fen". Wish it would be your own "yuan fen".

The Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior



Soc: Knowledge is not the same as wisdom.
Soc: ... You know how to clean a windshield?
Dan: Yes, why?
Soc: Wisdom is doing it.

Soc: There's no higher purpose... service to others.

Soc: You need to start asking better questions.

Soc: Everyone tells you what to do and what's good for you. They don't want you to find your own answers. They want you to believe theirs.
Dan: And let me guess you want me to believe yours.
Soc: No. I want you to stop gathering information from outside yourself and start gathering it from the inside.
Dan: What are you, a part of some cult or something?
Soc: People are afraid of what's inside and that's the only place they're ever gonna find what they need.

Soc: Why can't you sleep? Is it because maybe late at night, when all the noise dies down and you're lying there in the bed, and there's nobody around but you, then maybe, you get a little scared? Scared because suddenly everything feels so empty.

Soc: People think they are their thoughts. They think they are and it brings them all kinds of sadness.
Dan: I'm not what I think?
Soc: Of course not.
Soc: The mind is just a reflex organ. It reacts to everything. Fills your head with millions of random thoughts a day. Non of those thoughts reveal any more about you than a freckle does at the end of your nose.

Soc: That's what your training even your life is all about. Developing the wisdom to apply the right leverage in the right place at the right time.

Soc: Take out the trash.
Dan: You take out the trash.
Soc: The trash is up here (points to Dan's mind). That's the first part of your training. learning to throw out everything you don't need in here.

Soc: There's never nothing going on.

Soc: Take out the trash, Dan. The trash is keeping you from the only thing that matters... this moment, here, now. And when you truly are in the here and now, you'll be amazed at what you can do and how well you can do it.

Soc: Sometimes you have to loose your mind before you can come to your senses.



Dan: What kind of a warrior trains by sitting around scrubbing toilets?
Soc: When you become a warrior, you learn to meditate in every action.
Dan: Scrubbing toilets?
Soc: Letting go of attachments. Like your pride. Giving up your addictions.
Dan: Yeah, name one thing I'm addicted to.
Soc: Talking. Especially interrupting. Knowing everything, when in fact you know nothing.
Dan: You really think that this is going to expand my awareness of anything?

Soc: All you have is right now...

Soc: First realization of a warrior: Not knowing.

Soc: Emotions are natural like passing water.

Soc: Everything has a purpose... it's up to you to find it.

Dan's realizations:
1. Anger, hatred, violence... they're really just fear. Fear then, not money is the root of all evil.
2. Chaos Theory is correct except that chaos is actually not chaotic at all but perfectly controlled.
3. If you lend somebody $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
4. When making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich you must first apply the peanut butter, not the jelly to the bottom half of the bread.
5. The people that are the hardest to love are usually the ones who need it the most.
6. There's never nothing going on. There are no ordinary moments.

Soc: There is no "better". You will never be better. Same way you'll never be less than anybody else.

Soc: The habit is the problem. All you need to do is be conscious about your choices and responsible for your actions.

Soc: Every action had it's price and it's pleasure. Recognizing both sides, a warrior becomes realistic and responsible for his actions.

Soc: Death isn't sad. The sad thing is most people don't live at all.

Soc: When you feel fear, use the sword. Take it up here and cut the mind to ribbons. Slash through all those regrets and fears and anything else that lives in the past or the future.

Soc: A warrior does not give up what he loves. He finds love in what he does.

Soc: A warrior is not about perfection or victory or invulnerability. He's about absolute vulnerability. That's the only true courage.

Soc: The accident is your training. Life is choice. You can choose to be a victim or anything else you'd like to be.

Soc: A warrior acts, only a fool reacts.

Soc: There's no starting or stopping, only doing.

Soc: Nearly all of humanity share your predicament, Dan. If you don't get what you want, you suffer. And when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you can't hold onto it forever.

Soc: The gold is a craving. "If only I had it, I'd be happy." Can't you hear it in there?

Soc: You don't surrender you dreams. You surrender the one thing you never have and you never will -- control. Accept that you don't control what will happen to you... that you may or may not and that you are something exceptional either way.

3 Rules of Life (by Dan)
1. Paradox: Life is a mystery. Don't waste time trying to figure it out.
2. Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure.
3. Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

Dan: The journey's what brings us happiness. Not the destination.

Dan: When you get up there you make every move about the move.

Soc: Where are you?

Dan: Now.

The Peaceful Warrior

Movie Synopsis (from IMDb):

The story is about a young gymnast Dan Millman played by Scott Mechlowicz, and his struggle to make sense of his life in which he is successful but still unfulfilled. By chance he meets his "Yoda"/Schaolin priest/Boss Paul who helps him "git his haid straight" after which he goes on to be comfortable with his athletic prowess albeit not exactly olympic caliber. There is a lot of jumping around scene wise during which we don't know what is dream (part of getting his head straight) or reality showing his maturing personality. He suffers a debilating physical injury which forces him to work very hard to get back where he was ability wise earlier, but much wiser for successfully negotiating his transformation to wise old Grasshopper. This is almost a "Rocky IX" type movie with a wonderful happy ending.

Things I learned from the Tai Chi Push Hands Workshop

Along with 2 other fellows from Iloilo, I too traveled a long way to Manila to attend the Tai Chi Push Hands Workshop with Mr. Chris Vogel. I enjoyed and learned a lot from the workshop.

I made a list of what you need to know during push hands training.

TO BRING:
1. A bottle of agua. To quench your thirst.
2. A towel to wipe the sweat away!
3. Extra shirt

TO WEAR:
1. Loose-fitting dark shirt. Crew-neck is good.
2. Comfy pants. Shorts are okay, but for ladies I think you'll prefer pants.
3. Good pair of sneakers. High heels are definitely out!

TO DO:
1. Listen to the Sifu's instructions carefully first then execute to check if you have understood them fully. If you do it at the same time as the Sifu does, there is a big possibility that you will miss important points.
2. Clear your thoughts. When I say this I mean, do not think about "beating" your opponent. Have the "intention" but lose the ego!
3. Always keep the correct stance/posture.
4. Use your creativity. Don't be scared or hesitant. Sometimes, you don't even need to think... just feel and things will just follow.
5. Learn to trust yourself. The self who feels. Not the self to preoccupied to "beat" the opponent or "resist" the force.
6. It's good to learn to defend but practice aiming at your opponent too... for me this is the most challenging part.
7. Be open. Practice with the same and the opposite sex. Not because your opponent is a girl, it doesn't mean they are weak and your practice will be boring. Also, it is during practice that you will learn push hands... by being open, you won't miss those chances to learn.
8. Take your time and be patient. It is okay to be slow as long as you understand what you are doing. It doesn't matter if you look good. What matters is what's happening inside you... being good at push hands practice is a process. It doesn't happen with a snap of a finger.

What is TCUP?

Tai Chi Union of the Philippines

Mission :
The Tai Chi Union of the Philippines (Union) is a non-profit organization geared towards the propagation, support and uplifting of internal martial arts and chi kung (qigong) in general, and tai chi chuan (taiqi quan) in particular. The Union is specifically committed to exemplify the tai chi qualities of harmony and unity among practicing groups, teachers and students towards the direction of mutual assistance and working toward common goal.

Vision:
The Union envisions itself as the organization that would bring into harmony the Wushu International's concept of Tai Chi propagation and the independent traditional tai chi and internal martial arts organizations while respecting and accepting intrinsic difference. With this, the Union sees the marshaling of the energy of many individual initiatives that would result in an exponential growth in the practice of tai chi.

Philosophy:

The Union is guided by the following beliefs:

1. that tai chi chuan is essentially based on the "Tai Chi Classics" attributable to Chang Sanfeng, etc. and should be the main guidelines to adherence to the art
2. that scientific findings and modern language and concepts can and should clarify the profound meaning of the Classics
3. that creativity in the formation of the forms of practice and conduct of activities to develop and propagate the art should be encouraged for so long as they do not veer away from the essential meaning of the art based on the classics.

General Goals:

The Union shall therefore endeavor to:

1. Bring practitioners into a bond of fellowship of members
2. Provide access to information that would not be conveniently available
3. Bring to affordability, expensive resources through sharing
4. Hold periodic learning activities for common upgrading of teachers and students
5. Accredit teachers/instructors for teaching competence to safeguard the interests of students and protect the good name of tai chi
6. Provide a venue and organization where practitioners can have themselves evaluated for competency and level
7. Participate in international events and activities that would redound to the member's benefits based on the above avowed goals
8. To seek local and international funding to find support for these goals.

1. Formalization of the Union as a non-profit corporation

Tai Chi for Arthritis by Paul Lam
I have arthritis. When I learned about and practiced 24 form Tai Chi through the instruction of generous people from Blue Dragon Society International, wala na ang morning stiffness. I even stopped taking pain medications. Maganda at mabilis ang healing effect ng Tai Chi, lalo na kapag nasusunod ang principles at kapag disciplinado sa diet at practice. My instructor lent me one of his DVDs by Dr. Paul Lam. Maganda at madaling matutunan.



Taijiquan: Classical Yang Style
This is what will keep me busy this time. Dr. Yang started this instuctional DVD with a short lecture about Taijiquan. You have to study with this program. Ang ganda! One of the features of this CD is the yin yang sign. When you see this sign on screen, you will press enter. After pressing enter, an in depth discussion of the form will flash on the screen. Di nyo na rin kailangang basahin ng malakas kasi may gumagawa na nun sa CD :) So, if you are a visual or audio learner, para sa inyo ito.

This is under YMAA productions. Para sa mga early bird ito. Actually, if you are a Tai Chi practitioner, there is a 100% probability that you are an early riser. It is important to wake up early in the morning because it is a good time for Tai Chi practice. Napanood ko na rin itong CD na ito. Meron siyang 3 major categories (1) Demo, (2) Instructions, (3) Workout. Una muna demonstration. Madami-dami ito kaya sulit ang pagbili. Tapos yung mga steps, may in depth discussion siya sa "Instuctions". Sa workout naman, puede ka mamili kung 20-minute, 40-minute, or 60-minute workout. Ito pa ang maganda, sa workout puede ka mamili kung ang background music ay piano or flute and harp. Galing!

Tai Chi Sword Magic

I got my Tai Chi sword and began studying the 32 sword form. Here's an important thought I got from Tai Chi practice (you can even use this in your everyday life):

It is not important to get your sword in a "magical" way. What is essential is how you hold it, how you use it, how you handle it, how you take care of it, and how you appreciate it when you actually have it in your hands as you execute the forms. That's where the magic truly is!

6. Chi Kung and Tai Chi
Often asked is, what is the difference. The answer is Chi Kung is the mother of Tai Chi. Tai Chi is a specific kind of Chi Kung that is also a martial art.

By definition Chi in Chi Kung means energy or life force, an important concept in Chinese philosophy and medicine the state of which determines the condition of one’s health. And Kung in Chi Kung means a studied practice as an art or a discipline. Thus, Chi Kung is a body of knowledge and system of practice for enhancing and balancing the Chi.

Tai Chi literally is the “Grand Ultimate”, as symbolized by the “yin and yang” which represents balance and complementation as the highest achievement in a dualistic universe. As a martial art it is best described as “defeating a thousand pound with four ounces”, to describe an art that does not depend on strength, size or speed to win. As an application in daily life, it presents a third option to the limited choice of either submission or domination.

If it’s a van or a 4 wheeler, it can go all the way in. (see map)
Otherwise, park you car in Binubusan, where we have arrangement with the neighborhood for guarding your car (we’ll give name to look for). And we’ll have transport to get you in.

b. Ride with us in a van.
Just pay additional PHP550, and your taken cared of, from a pick-up point in Metro Manila to the site and back.

c. Commute.

Where to buy a Tai Chi Sword in Manila

When I decided to buy my very first Tai Chi sword, I was imagining it to be magical -- just like when Harry Potter bought his wand. I kept saying to myself that the sword will find me and that it will be one of the happiest moments of my life.

So on a very humid Saturday afternoon, I walked the streets of Binondo, Manila. A friend told me that there is a shop called SAMYE marketing where they sell Tai Chi swords. He told me to look for Mang Ruben... and so I did. After a few hours walking with no sense of direction, I began to pray that Mang Ruben appear before me like an angel. Unfortunately the only thing that appeared before me is an orange peeling from one of the fruit carts in the market.

I was desperate to see the shop. But after more than 2 hours of walking, what I found is a place called Oversea Jewelry and Giftshop located in Salazar St. -- I came back to it after scanning the streets of Salazar and Masangkay once more in search for Mang Ruben.



Since I had come along way to Manila to buy a Tai Chi sword, I gave up my search for SAMYE marketing and got one from the shop at Salazar St. instead.

As I was walking, I passed by a small bookstore beside Xinhua Bookstore and realized that it could be Mang Ruben's store. I looked around (feeling a bit regretful that I didn't ask) while waiting to be assisted by a woman (who by the way turned out to be Ruban's wife!). I wasn't able to see the sword selection but I think they have better stocks. Also, they have a big selection of Tai Chi resource materials (which are all in Chinese) like magazines, books, and VCDs. The woman also mentioned that Ruben is also a practitioner so if I were you, check out their store and let Ruben assist you when buying for a sword.

I got lost because I asked the wrong people from the wrong streets. Silly I know. But I had to be lost for two things: First, so I could share with you now two stores, instead of one, which sell Tai Chi swords. Second,so I could remind you all to ask when you get lost!

The prices for the sword ranges between P1,200 to P1,500 (while the collapsible sword ranges from P250-P800). They also sell fans for P400-P450 each. Ask for a bargain because they are nice enough to offer you a good deal.

Tai chi is a series of gentle movements that can bring about stress reduction, improved balance and many other health benefits. Find out what tai chi is all about.

Tai chi (ti-CHE) is sometimes described as "meditation in motion." Originally developed in China as a form of self-defense, this graceful form of exercise has existed for about 2,000 years. It's becoming increasingly popular around the world, both as a basic exercise program and as a complement to other health care methods. Health benefits include stress reduction, greater balance and increased flexibility —especially for older adults.

What is tai chi?
Tai chi is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise. To do tai chi, you perform a defined series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each movement or posture flows into the next without pausing.

Who is tai chi for?
If you're trying to improve your general health, you may find tai chi helpful as part of your program. Tai chi is generally safe for people of all ages and levels of fitness. Studies have shown that for older adults tai chi can improve balance and reduce the risk of falls. Because the movements are low impact and put minimal stress on your muscles and joints, tai chi is appealing to many older adults. For these same reasons, if you have a condition such as arthritis or you're recovering from an injury, you may find it useful.

Tai chi appears to offer both physical and mental benefits no matter what your age. It's used to:

-Reduce stress
-Increase flexibility
-Improve muscle strength and definition
-Increase energy, stamina and agility
-Increase feelings of well-being

Tai chi hasn't been studied scientifically until recently. Preliminary research shows that for older adults, in particular, practicing tai chi regularly may:

-Reduce anxiety and depression
-Improve balance and coordination, reducing the number of falls
-Improve sleep quality, such as staying asleep longer at night and feeling more alert during the day
-Slow bone loss in women following menopause
-Reduce high blood pressure
-Improve cardiovascular fitness
-Relieve chronic pain
-Improve everyday physical functioning

Types of tai chi
Like yoga, many styles of tai chi exist. Some of these styles include:

-Chen
-Hao
-Sun
-Wu
-Yang
-Zhao Bao

The intensity of tai chi varies somewhat depending on the style. For example, the Chen style may be more fast-paced than other styles. However, most styles are gentle and suitable for everyone. Talk to your doctor and tai chi instructor to make sure the style you're using is appropriate for your physical capabilities.

Pros and cons
When learned correctly and practiced regularly, tai chi appears to be a very positive form of exercise:

-It's self-paced and noncompetitive.
-You don't need a large physical space or special clothing or equipment.
-You can do tai chi anytime, anyplace.
-It's easy to do in groups as well as by yourself.
-You can add new movements as you become more proficient.
-Because tai chi is slow and gentle, it has virtually no negative side effects. It's possible you could strain yourself or "overdo" things when first learning, but with proper instruction, this shouldn't pose a barrier to practicing tai chi.

How to learn tai chi
To gain the full benefits of tai chi and reduce the small risk of injury, learn the correct way to do the postures and movements. Strict attention to your body position and breathing are critical, so it's best to study directly under a teacher rather than with a book or videotape. As you attend a series of classes, the instructor can give you personal guidance and correct any errors in your approach before they become habit. As you practice, you learn how to do tai chi without straining your muscles and joints.

Once you're comfortable with the tai chi basics, you can do it by yourself. You may find it helpful to practice tai chi in the same place and at the same time every day. You'll likely experience some health benefits right away, but they probably won't be dramatic. Be patient. Health benefits accumulate over time.

You can find tai chi classes in cities throughout the United States. To locate a class in your community, contact your local senior center, YMCA or YWCA, health club or wellness center.

Although tai chi is generally safe, consider talking with your doctor before starting a new program. This is particularly true if you have any problems with your joints, spine or heart.

What is Tai Chi?

The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Force'. The notion of 'supreme ultimate' is often associated with the Chinese concept of yin-yang, the notion that one can see a dynamic duality (male/female, active/passive, dark/light, forceful/yielding, etc.) in all things. 'Force' (or, more literally, 'fist') can be thought of here as the means or way of achieving this ying-yang, or 'supreme-ultimate' discipline.

Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them.

For many practicioners the focus in doing them is not, first and foremost, martial, but as a meditative exercise for the body. For others the combat aspects of Tai Chi are of considerable interest. In Chinese philosophy and medicine there exists the concept of 'chi', a vital force that animates the body. One of the avowed aims of Tai Chi is to foster the circulation of this 'chi' within the body, the belief being that by doing so the health and vitality of the person are enhanced. This 'chi' circulates in patterns that are close related to the nervous and vascular system and thus the notion is closely connected with that of the practice of acupuncture and other oriental healing arts.

Another aim of Tai Chi is to foster a calm and tranquil mind, focused on the precise execution of these exercises. Learning to do them correctly provides a practical avenue for learning about such things as balance, alignment, fine-scale motor control, rhythm of movement, the genesis of movement from the body's vital center, and so on. Thus the practice of Tai Chi can in some measure contribute to being able to better stand, walk, move, run, etc. in other spheres of life as well. Many practitioners notice benefits in terms of correcting poor postural, alignment or movement patterns which can contribute to tension or injury. Furthermore the meditative nature of the exercises is calming and relaxing in and of itself.

Because the Tai Chi movements have their origins in the martial arts, practicing them does have some martial applications. In a two-person exercise called 'push-hands' Tai Chi principles are developed in terms of being sensitive to and responsive of another person's 'chi' or vital energy. It is also an opportunity to employ some of the martial aspects of Tai Chi in a kind of slow-tempo combat. Long-time practitioners of Tai Chi who are so-inclined can become very adept at martial arts. The emphasis in Tai Chi is on being able to channel potentially destructive energy (in the form of a kick or a punch) away from one in a manner that will dissipate the energy or send it in a direction where it is no longer a danger.

The practical exercises of Tai Chi are also situated in a wider philosophical context of Taoism. This is a reflective, mystical Chinese tradition first associated with the scholar and mystic Lao Tsu, an older contemporary of Confucius. He wrote and taught in the province of Honan in the 6th century B.C. and authored the seminal work of Taoism, the Tao Te Ching. As a philosophy, Taoism has many elements but fundamentally it espouses a calm, reflective and mystic view of the world steeped in the beauty and tranquillity of nature.

Tai Chi also has, particularly amongst eastern practitioners, a long connection with the I Ching a Chinese system of divination. There are associations between the 8 basic I Ching trigrams plus the five elements of Chinese alchemy (metal, wood, fire, water and earth) with the thirteen basic postures of Tai Chi created by Chang San-feng. There are also other associations with the full 64 trigrams of the I Ching and other movements in the Tai Chi form.
